Imagine cruising around in a 2008 Mercedes S-Class that still turns heads in 2026. That’s true timeless luxury, yet it comes at a fraction of the original price tag. The W221 S-Class fits into Mercedes’ lineup as the flagship S-Class, known for its innovation, comfort, and performance.
As the fifth generation of the S-Class, the W221 was produced in a phenomenal period of time that blended simple technology with classic luxury features. Design work began in 1999, but first model sales didn’t begin until early 2006. This was back when large touch screens and overbearing technology didn’t take over the center console.
The W221 offers unbeatable value for luxury enthusiasts who want some technology, but don’t want a car with full digital displays and large screens. However, perceived high maintenance costs and aging technology might deter some people from a 20 year old car.
Here’s how to decide with our W221 pros and cons, as well as a model comparison and tips for W221 owners.
Pros of Buying a W221 Mercedes in 2026
Price
Mercedes W221 Sales Data from 2025
| Sales | Lowest Sale | Highest Sale | Average Sale |
|---|---|---|---|

One of the biggest pros in buying a used vehicle: the price tag. When you put the average sale price into perspective, it is certainly less than the cost of a brand new car these days. At the time of production, base models were top-tier luxury vehicles selling for over $75,000 in 2006. Well-kept, low-mileage examples can be found today for a great price.
Luxury Features
If you’ve never driven an S-Class Mercedes, take my word for it: the ride quality is unmatched. Advanced suspension systems, quiet cabin, and advanced technology (for its time) like night-vision and massaging seats.

As the successor to the W220 S-Class, there were many upgrades in regards to the materiality. Chrome accents on the exterior combined with leather and wood on the interior offers a premium feel. Long wheelbase variants include extra room in the back seats as well.
Wide Range of Variants
There is a seemingly endless list of variants to purchase the perfect W221 for you. Not all models were available in every country, however, there were 9 diesel models, 14 gasoline models, and 1 hybrid model. Yeah, 24 different model variants with engines ranging from 2.1L Inline 4 to a 6.0L V12.
The wide range of models may be overwhelming, but they offer a wide window for different options. If you’re concerned about fuel economy, the smaller engines or diesel models will be for you. If you are looking for performance, S63 AMG or S65 AMG models will offer just that.
Cons and Drawbacks of W221 Ownership
Maintenance Costs
As with any luxury German car, maintenance costs are an often mentioned con. Having a reputable mechanic who is familiar with these cars is certainly a plus. While it won’t save you from future repairs, it is best to buy a vehicle that has a complete service history that follows the Mercedes recommended service intervals.
Reliability
Doing research on the specific year, model, engine, and transmission that you want is a must. Issues tend to be more prevalent with the early models, but problems can happen to any vehicle. These cars are mostly reliable, but commonly reported issues include: AIRMATIC suspension compressor problems, electronics (sensors, control units), and general engine/transmission problems if they weren’t cared for.
Again, finding a vehicle with an extensive service history is one of the ways to ensure you minimize potential problems and maximize future reliability.
Outdated Technology
This con is more of a personal preference. If you MUST have features like Apple CarPlay or Bluetooth music, you will not enjoy the technology in a W221. However, sometimes the simple technology found in older cars is what makes them so special. While the W221 was built to have advanced tech, compared to today’s standards, it is certainly lacking the technology and safety features of 2026.
Top Model Comparisons: S550, S600, S63 AMG, and S65 AMG
Since there are too many models to cover in this article, I’ll only cover the top four W221 models.
Mercedes S550 (2005-2013) / Mercedes S600 (2006-2013)

If you are looking for a luxurious car that is perfect for a daily driver, the S550 (called the S500 outside of the USA) and the S600 is what you need. They offer the best balance between power, reliability, and comfort, with the V8 S550 oftentimes being considered more reliable. They were among the top models at the time, so you have many premium features that were unavailable on the lower models.
Mercedes S63 AMG (2006-2013)
The lower-level AMG (that seems disrespectful to say), that is more for the speed enthusiasts. Not quite as powerful as the S65, but can be bought more affordably. Read about the pre-facelift S63 AMG in more detail.
Mercedes S65 AMG (2006-2013)
The top W221 model. The best of the best. Only for those who will spend the money to receive the ultimate performance in return. Read more about the specs and performance data of the pre-facelift S65 AMG.

Mercedes W221 Buyer’s Tips and Market Insights for 2026

Here are some final tips, now that you’ve learned about a few of the different models. Some great places to find yourself a W221 would be on Bring a Trailer or Cars and Bids. Those are the two main online auction houses that I constantly browse. Both sites allow you to bid on cars across the country, view many photos of each car, and ask questions to the seller.
If you live somewhere that road salt and rust are a problem, you should at least take a look at auctions from somewhere without those issues. Always check for rust spots across the entire vehicle, as it can destroy your car or be very expensive to fix!
I can’t stress enough, service history is one of the most important things to have. If you don’t know how a car was previously maintained, you can be in for problems down the line. I don’t like to give an arbitrary mileage figure, but a car with less than 100k miles should certainly last quite a while longer if properly maintained.
What the future holds for the Mercedes W221 is uncertain. However, I believe they will stabilize in value as time goes on, becoming somewhat of a “classic”. They are among the last S-Classes without major screens, but they do have modern technology and comfort. I think this will be a huge draw for consumers as time goes on, as not everyone enjoys technology that looks like it’s out of a spaceship!
Final Thoughts on Buying a W221 in 2026
I hope what I provided here was enough for the start of your research into W221 ownership. I believe this car is a smart purchase if you prioritize simple luxury that doesn’t quite cost what a modern luxury car would cost. Luxury car ownership is sometimes cheap to get into, but ongoing maintenance can be expensive. If it is within your budget, an older luxury vehicle like the W221 is a very attractive purchase.
If you learned something, have any questions, or already own a W221, share your experience in the comments below! I am excited to see what 2026 holds for these amazing vehicles, and I look forward to hearing your stories.
